Graphic design:

Today I have started my exploration of graphic design. There has been a lot for me to learn today because graphics isn't an area that I have ventured into a lot before. I have understood the six main areas that a graphic designer would possibly work on. These are: Advertising, branding, typography, signage, editorial design and packaging.

Using fonts in graphics

Today I have used different techniques to create drawings. I haven’t done a lot of drawings of fonts and typography before so I found that it has encouraged me to look at the proportions of the subject I am working from. It also stressed to me how important it is too look at the subject as often as possible because I found that my proportions were not correct.

First I drew the ‘454’ with Indian ink and a stick. I was difficult to control the movement of the stick with made the drawing much freer. I like the style of the stick drawing because it’s less controlled although I do feel that it has highlighted that I haven’t got the proportions correct.

The drawing on the bottom right is a crayon drawing over brown ink. I feel that this was a more successful drawing of the font because I focused more attention on the proportions. I made the drawing clearer by applying more ink around the lettering so that it was visible.

I was encouraged to draw the top left drawing with my left hand (the hand I don’t usually draw with). I found that this made me focus a lot more time on the subject I was drawing because I wasn’t able to draw it freely.

Finally, I was able to draw the last drawing (top right) normally. I felt that I would be more adventurous with the composition. I am happy with this drawing because I feel it demonstrates the still that I have adapted to through the journey of drawing them all.
